Gabrieli Editions
Over the past decades, the art of music notation has been suffering deeply. Digital notation software became available at a reasonable price, the programs ease-of-use improved greatly, in other words: everybody started making their own scores and editions. In this, it is my experience that most of the people (and even some respected publishing houses) use the engraving software out-of-the-box, having the program make all decisions for them. Often, these people also have no profound training in music theory or notational history, and do not have a thorough knowledge of the used software. This situation can never result in an aestethically pleasing and correctly notated music score. Default program settings can be no more than a starting point. While they might suffice for home use, they do not meet the quality expected for professional editions.
The mission of Gabrieli Editions is to provide clean, correct, consistent and visually attractive music scores by overriding the basics of digital music engraving. Software is used as a medium, not as a robot. I only rely on my own custom-created templates in combination with a bunch of self-made fonts. Beauty and quality are the only goals of my typographical activities.
Services offered
I professionaly engrave music. This means that I work as a music score typesetter, making digital scores of your manuscripts or editions. Since I am highly active as a professional musician as well, timing is an essential part. Please feel free at any time to contact me.
My pricing policy for this work is set to 0.20 EUR a frame (which is a non-empty bar on one staff of music notation). The reason I charge this way is threefold: the customer always knows in advance the exact price for the score, there are no surprises (e.g. according to a page-rate, the engraver could alter the music spacing so as to fill more pages and earn more money), and it covers quite adequately my work hours. This includes all 'typical' projects with 'default' elements (lyrics in standard languages, non-extensive figured bass, fingering etc.). Please do not hesitate to contact me about more complex or graphical scores, as they require more work. I am very flexible, everything can be negotiated.
Additional services include part extraction (at 0.05 EUR a frame), layout of cover pages and text prefaces (at 5.00 EUR a page), transposition (depends on the extra work of replacing accidentals and reformatting the score layout)... By default, all completed projects are provided by e-mail in PDF-format (including one proof-read version before). Other file formats (such as image extraction) can be arranged as well. Printed copies can be delivered by mail at extra charge.
At request, and given my training as a harpsichordist and music theorist, I can also make new scholarly editions. Please send me an e-mail for any information about this.
In the past, I have been asked to layout Masters dissertations and Doctoral thesisses as well. If musically related, this can also be arranged. Please contact me for more details.
